127. Cooper Union Museum.  The Logic and Magic of Color. New York:  Cooper Union, 1960.  Bibl.  B/W illus.  36 pp.

    This catalog for an exhibition of 300 objects held from April 20 to August 31, 1960 features a 16 page essay by Edward Kallop that sweeps in literary, historical and color science sources.  Also of interest is the 125 item unannotated bibliography organized into sections on color and light, nature and color chemistry, visual phenomena, terminology and color measurement, and color and human response.  The paper stock and inks used to print the catalog were chosen according to Faber Birren’s research studies to produce 80% contrast for minimum eye fatigue.


128. Fogg Art Museum.  Color in Art:  A Tribute to Arthur Pope. Boston: Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, 1974.134 pp.  Index, bibl., endnotes/footnotes, B/W illus., Color illus.

    This catalog for a 1972 exhibition at the Fogg Museum begins with Howard T. Fisher’s excellent overview of color, which pays special attention to a color solid by Arthur Pope, a teacher  in Harvard’s Fine Arts Department from 1906 to1949.  James M. Carpenter discusses the exhibition premise that art can be better understood when color relationships are understood.  Pope’s approach to color analysis, which emphasized the variability of color perception, is discussed and illustrated in diagrams of paintings selected from the exhibition.  Supplemental material includes Pope’s own description of his color solid and Fisher’s geometric transformation of the solid, which allows simultaneous display of hue, value, and intensity.  The reader interested in Pope’s color solid will find this to be an excellent resource.

    This is the catalog for an exhibition of works from the Impressionists to Op artists.  All of the works rely on human perception to achieve illusory visual effects of motion, transparency, vanishing or vibrating boundaries, and three-dimensionality.  Anyone interested in special color effects will be informed by the text and inspired by the illustrations.
