The Department of Design, Housing, and Apparel (DHA) is centered on the interactions among people and their environments of apparel, housing, interiors and visual communication. We are committed to developing a better understanding about these interactions to contribute to human empowerment and betterment, to enhancing the well being of individuals and communities through effecting positive change, and to improving near environmental conditions. Our research and outreach advances knowledge in these areas and provides a basis for undergraduate and graduate education and engagement and outreach.
One of the three departments of the College of Design, DHA serves about 700 undergraduate majors and 50 graduate students. DHA offers five undergraduate programs leading to a B.S. in Apparel Design, Interior Design, Housing Studies, and Retail Merchandising, a B.F.A. in Graphic Design, and four degree options at the graduate level, Master of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts (emphasis in interactive design) and the Ph.D. Our outreach program with faculty extension specialists connects DHA with the citizens of Minnesota addressing housing and apparel issues across the state.
